End-to-End Sample Tracking with RFID

Full compliance with extensive documentation requirements and other legal obligations must be observed at all times in the pharmaceutical industry. The highest quality standards are therefore applied to the proper tracking of  data and samples. Inspectors from international regulatory authorities (e.g. FDA) are increasingly carrying out unannounced inspections and have very extensive powers, including the immediate closure of the inspected facility. Continuous sample tracking must therefore be guaranteed at all times.

Seamless integration of IT and OT

The integrated sample-to-cloud solution from Turck Vilant Systems links IT and OT in a way that is as yet unique. It records the detailed position and direction of movement of sample collections including product descriptions and transport sheet. The data of the UHF RFID tags are stored on the Turck Vilant server in the local network of the company or laboratory. They are therefore open for central data storage in data lakes. 

RFID identification in sample management

After physical removal in production, the sample is taken to a storage room where it is provided with a sample description. The system issues an RFID tag with a unique ID that is affixed to the sample. The sample data can now be retrieved from the server via the ID.

Tracking of samples in building corridors and laboratory

On the way to the laboratory, the RFID tags are read as they pass through RFID gates in building corridors and exits as well as elevators, and the verification of samples as well as their position and direction of movement is fully automated. At the analysis station, the sample collection is again identified by a UHF reader. This ensures that the samples are in the designated laboratory. 

Consistent monitoring and documentation

After the test is completed, the samples must be disposed of. They are not allowed back into production. This is recorded and documented by means of RFID gates. Sample descriptions and transport sheet are returned to the warehouse and properly archived. Throughout the entire process, the position, direction of movement and status of each sample can be tracked with absolute certainty, ensuring that information on each sample is available at short notice.
